4 extraordinary achievements of the Moroccan national team, now dubbed ‘Giant Killer’

Bisnis.comJAKARTA- Morocco national team managed to make history in the world of football after beating the Portuguese national team 1-0 in the quarter-finals World Cup 2022Saturday (10/12) evening.

The team dubbed the Atlas Lions advanced to the semi-finals and sent Cristiano Ronaldo et al home in disappointment.

Youssef En-Nesyri scored the game’s only goal, with a header through the bar minutes before halftime.

In the semi-final, Morocco will face the French national team, who successfully beat the English national team 2-1.

At least there have been four extraordinary achievements that have been made by Morocco so far. Anything? Here is the review.

First African representative in the semi-finals

Morocco’s victory over Portugal made them the first national team from the African continent to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.

Even former Arsenal and Real Madrid servant Mesut Ozil said he was proud of the Moroccan victory, which he says is a great achievement for the African and Muslim continents.

“Proud. What a team! A very big achievement for the African and Muslim Continent. Glad to see that such a fairy tale is still possible in modern football – it will give people so much strength and hope,” tweeted Ozil. @M10Saturday (10/12/2022).

Not yet conceded a goal

Of the five matches played at the 2022 World Cup, the Moroccan goal was not scored by any of its opponents.

In the last Group F game against Canada (1/12/2022), Morocco conceded a goal in the 40th minute. Even so, it was not a Canada player who scored against the Atlas Lions team. But the players themselves, aka an own goal from their defender Nayef Aguerd.

It’s no wonder their goalkeeper, Yassine Bono, has often been voted the best player in Morocco’s matches, including against Portugal.

Best Defense

Having never been conceded by opposing players, making Morocco the team with the best defense of all other teams at the 2022 World Cup.

In fact, by the way, Morocco had already faced Portugal, which was at the time the most productive team – with England – with 12 goals.

Morocco’s goal has only penetrated once so far, with an own goal. Under them are Brazil and Croatia who have conceded 3 goals.

Giant Slaughter

Morocco’s journey to secure a ticket to the semi-finals isn’t exactly easy. They have beaten or retained the best teams of giants several times.

In the first match of Group F (23/11/2022), Morocco managed to draw against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia. Luka Modric and others had to content themselves with playing scoreless against Morocco.

Morocco also managed to beat FIFA’s second-ranked team Belgium 2-0 in the Group F follow-up game. At that time, goals from Romain Saiss and Zakaria Aboukhlal brought Lukaku et al to their knees.

In the quarter-finals, Morocco pulled off another upset by beating another top team, Spain, via a penalty shootout. For 120 minutes, Morocco managed to hold the 2010 World Cup winner to a 0-0 draw. On penalties, Morocco won 3-0.

Finally, last night to be precise, Morocco managed to beat the winner of Euro 2016, Portugal, with the score of 1-0.
