Man has dentures stuck in his lungs after accidentally swallowing them

A 22-year-old man from Wisconsin, US, nearly died after accidentally swallowing silver-plated dentures that lodged in his lungs. According to a New York Post reports he was wearing a row of silver dentures when he had a seizure and accidentally swallowed them. After the accident, he suffered from a strong cough and wheezing and nearly choked on his dentures.

He was rushed to hospital where an x-ray revealed he had a 4.1cm prosthesis stuck in the airways of his lungs. A case study detailing the incident was published this week in the medical journal Cureus.

After the tests were done, the doctor took him to a bronchoscope to remove the object. The procedure involves inserting a thin, lightweight tube called a bronchoscope into the airway to remove the accessory.

“A chest X-ray revealed a radiopaque foreign body measuring approximately 4.1 cm above the right main bronchus. The Stranger Things resembled a horseshoe shape, with sharp edges and jagged teeth. A bronchoscopy is performed to remove inhaled foreign bodies. Although it crosses the vocal cords, its recovery is very difficult given the shape and size of the dental product. Unfortunately, the horseshoe-shaped object had sharp, jagged edges,” the newspaper wrote.

“After long discussions, the first attempts with a flexible bronchoscope were agreed. After intubation with an 8.0 endotracheal tube, a flexible bronchoscope is inserted into the airway. First, under direct visualization, toothed forceps are used to dislodge the dental device from the bronchial wall. The resulting minor bleeding was controlled by instilling cold saline,” he continued.

Doctors managed to remove the denture from his lung airway. The patient, however, developed bronchospasm – in which the muscles in the airways of the lungs tighten – following the surgery and was treated with steroids before being discharged.

A few months ago, a 34-year-old man in the United States swallowed a whole banana wrapped in a condom in a fit of rage. A case study describing the devastation associated with condoms, considered a world first, has been published in the journal Cureus.
