Two-wheeled vehicles contributing to the most frequent traffic accidents require the application of driving safety technology

mobilinanews (Jakarta) – In developing countries like Indonesia, two-wheeled vehicles are the most popular transportation option due to their relatively affordable prices and agility in the often frustrating traffic jams.

The Traffic Corps (Korlantas) of the Indonesian National Police records that the population of two-wheeled vehicles in Indonesia in June 2023 will reach over 130 million units, equivalent to 83.45% of total private vehicle ownership .

Unfortunately, two-wheeled vehicle ownership that is not accompanied by good driving behavior and adequate safety technology contributes to the high number of traffic accidents.

Data from Korlantas Polri shows that there was a significant increase in the number of traffic accidents in 2022 with 137,851 cases, compared to 2021 which recorded 103,645 cases and 2020 with 100,028 cases. More than 70% of these traffic accidents involve two-wheeled motor vehicles.

This shows the vulnerability of motorcycle users to traffic accidents due to various factors. Even at the meeting of the Global Alliance of Safety NGOs, motorcycles have become one of the highlights of road safety actions.

Therefore, the Road Safety Association, as an organization that focuses on road safety issues, organized a focus group discussion on Wednesday (21/6/2023) at JS Luwansa Hotel, South of Jakarta, who discussed improving the safety of two-wheeled motor vehicles.

Rio Oktaviano, coordinator of the Road Safety Association (RSA) Indonesia said: “Through this panel discussion, the Road Safety Association invited a number of stakeholders such as the Ministry of Transport, the Indonesian Traffic Police and the New Car Assessment Program of the ‘ASEAN with the aim of finding solutions to reduce the number of accident victims and improve driving safety. Not only from the regulator side, we also invited a number of motorcycle user communities from the rider side for feedback and suggestions on improving driving safety. Through this FGD, we hope to find a solution to reduce the number of accidents while keeping motorists safe from traffic accidents.”

On the same occasion, Chief Commissioner of Police Aries Syahbudin, Head of Audit and Inspection Sub-Directorate – Security and Safety Directorate, Korlantas Polri, confirmed that motorized two-wheeled vehicles are indeed the biggest contributor to the number of accidents in Indonesia.

“We have identified the 5 most common driver behaviors that cause traffic accidents, namely, being negligent towards oncoming traffic, not keeping a safe distance, being careless in turns, not obeying the rules of the road and being careless when overtaking. For this reason, we have implemented various programs to ensure the safety, security, order and smoothness of traffic, including literacy road safety cooperate with various parties including RSA, law enforcement with manual and electronic ticketing, as well as development safety driving/riding center linked to the SIM, TAR test system (traffic attitude recording) and DPS (demerit point system).”

Sapril, Sub-Directorate for the Promotion of Safety and Partnership at the Directorate of Road Equipment – General Directorate of Land Transport – Ministry of Transport revealed that the average death rate due to traffic accidents per year, which reaches 27,000 people (the equivalent of 3 to 4 people die per hour) in Indonesia, is quite alarming.

“Furthermore, since around 80% of road accident victims are of working age. For this reason, we are also coordinating with the Ministry of Education to include traffic accident prevention education in the school curriculum. But it is an effort that requires a long process. Meanwhile, as a regulatory body, the Ministry of Transport is currently making various efforts, including drafting motor vehicle regulations by adopting United Nations regulatory standards to ensure a higher level of safety for automotive products to be used in Indonesia, so our goal is to reduce the death rate from traffic accidents, traffic of up to 85% can be achieved. »

Adrianto Wiyono ASEAN NCAP Technical Committee “There are three factors that contribute to traffic accidents, namely vehicles, the environment and humans. For this reason, adding technologies that can help reduce accidents and mitigate losses is very important. one of which is Anti-lock braking system (ABS) which is an innovative braking system for vehicles by preventing the wheels from locking during a sudden stop so that the motorcycle can maintain stability and help the rider not to fall.

ABS is a technology that has been around for a long time and studies have confirmed that it can save lives. Also, in terms of government regulations, several countries such as the UK and Canada have currently required the use of ABS, even ABS on two-wheeled vehicles is currently required in EU countries. ASEAN such as Thailand and Malaysia.

“Hopefully, this technology will become more affordable and can also be implemented in Indonesia, especially on motorcycles, since Indonesia has the largest population and population in ASEAN. The use of ABS s Accompanied by proper education in its use, it is hoped that Indonesia will definitely be able to take the lead in reducing the number of traffic accidents,” he concluded.
