Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Meta announced that it would remove news content on Facebook and Instagram, from all users in Canada, prior to the enactment of the Online News Act (Bill C-18) in that country.
“Today we confirmed that the availability of news on Facebook and Instagram to all users in Canada will be discontinued before the coming into force of the Online News Act (Bill C-18),” says the announcement.
According to Meta, in order to comply with Bill C-18 which will be passed by the Canadian Parliament on June 22, 2023 local time, media content, including publishers and broadcasters, will no longer be available there.
To quote blogging officially, Friday (23/6/2023), this change will not affect products like Instagram and Facebook for users in Canada.
Additionally, Meta claims to continue to fight misinformation and has built a global fact-checking network, partnering with over 90 independent fact-checking organizations around the world.
“Fact-checks will continue with respect to remaining content available in Canada,” the Facebook parent wrote.
Previously, Meta had indeed conducted a news content throttling trial for a handful of users in Canada, in response to the Online News Act.
To quote EdgesSunday (06/04/2023), ABC News reported, the trial is expected to reach one to five percent of Facebook and Instagram users in Canada.
