VIVA Techno – Amazon has officially kicked off its latest round of employee sales. Previously announced layoffs of up to 9,000 employees affected workers in Amazon’s web services (AWS) and human resources sectors.
The cuts were made according to plan due to an internal memo from the tech giant last month that said AWS and HR staff would be on the chopping block.
Wednesday was the start of everything. Affected employees in the United States, Canada and Costa Rica have all received notifications, according to two internal memos from Amazon executives. Staff in other areas will soon know the status of their positions, according to the memos.
“This is a tough day in our organization. We are working hard to treat everyone involved with respect,” AWS CEO Adam Selipsky wrote to staff.
The laid-off employees will receive transitional health benefits, severance pay, severance pay, job search assistance and other services, the company says. However, despite the company’s stated intentions and relatively comfortable layoff plans, AWS employees may not feel highly respected.
Amazon’s cloud computing arm is easily one of the company’s most profitable areas. Even amid the current economic tech turmoil of the past year, AWS remains a thriving revenue stream.
In its latest quarterly report, Amazon notes that AWS sales grew 20% year-over-year and AWS revenue grew about 2% between late 2021 and late 2022.
