Colored by a red card, Canada failed to beat Nigeria

Melbourne: The Canadian Women’s National Team, which is part of Group B, played its first match against Nigeria in the Group B qualifier for the 2023 Women’s World Cup at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Australia on Friday, July 21, 2023.

Canada, which is more favoured, appears in fact to be dominant over Nigeria. They had the opportunity to open the scoring in the 50th minute after the referee scored the point due to a violation by a Nigerian player in the forbidden area.

Unfortunately, Canada did not take advantage of this golden opportunity. The veteran Canadian player, Christine Sinclair (40) who presented herself as executor did not fulfill her duties because her shot missed.

Sinclair’s missed penalty forced Canada to settle for a 0-0 draw against Nigeria, which was reduced to 10 men after Deborah Abiodun was shown a red card in injury time.

For Canada, this result is certainly disappointing as they failed to overtake hosts Australia, who cruised to a 1-0 win over Ireland and temporarily topped the Group B standings.
