A woman died after eating sardine in a restaurant in the city of Bordeaux, French. A total of 12 other people, mostly foreigners, are also hospitalized after eating sardines in the same restaurant.

Reported by the news agency AFP, Thursday (9/14/2023), French health authorities announced that the victim died of botulism after eating sardines in a restaurant. Botulism is a serious neurological disease that is usually caused by eating improperly stored foods.

The restaurant in downtown Bordeaux itself preserved the sardines, the DGS said on Tuesday (12/9) evening, local time.

A total of 12 people are still receiving emergency treatment in hospitals due to botulism, health authorities said. Five of them had to receive respiratory assistance. They include American, Irish, German and Canadian citizens.

A German citizen returned to his home country for treatment, as did a resident of Barcelona, Spain.

They all ate at the “Tchin Tchin Wine Bar” restaurant between September 4 and 10, a period usually frequented by many tourists in the city known for its wine and gastronomy.

They all eat sardine which the restaurateur himself kept in a jar, indicated the DGS.

Botulism is fatal in five to ten percent of cases due to toxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum when canned foods are not sufficiently sterilized.
