U-17 national team ready to give their best at the World Cup

President of the PSSI, Erick Thohir (doc. PSSI)

Jakarta: The draw for the 2023 U-17 World Cup will take place in Zurich, Switzerland on Friday, September 15 evening at 9:00 p.m. WIB. The general president of the PSSI, Erick Thohir, has a positive aura to determine the potential opponents of the Garuda Muda team.

“What is sure is that there will be challenges when Indonesia enters Pot 1 as the first team. But what can I say, it is the privilege to be the host. Therefore, we at PSSI have prepared a long time ago so that the Garuda Muda National Team really deserves to be in first position “The national training program lasting more than a month in Germany is an important part , in addition to the support of Frank Wormuth and German football, as well as the Dortmund club which is ready to finalize the team. “, said Erick Thohir, Thursday (14/9) in Jakarta.

The draw will be conducted by FIFA Tournament Director Jaime Yarza, accompanied by former 1995 FIFA U17 World Cup winner Stephen Appiah and Julio Cesar, who played in the final of the 1995 edition, as assistants. The event will be held at the FIFA headquarters without the presentation of representatives of the participants and the tournament host. The draw mechanism is also different from that of the 2023 U-20 World Cup which was canceled in Indonesia.

In the FIFA U-17 draw, 24 teams from six confederations were divided into six groups. Each group includes four teams. Indonesia, as hosts, will automatically enter Pot 1. Team Garuda Muda will also be placed in Group A.

For the rest, the distribution of the pot is based on the performances of the last five matches of the U-17 World Cup. Newer tournaments will have a higher points weighting. There are also five bonus points for each champion on all six continents.

Apart from this, another rule is that two teams from the same confederation cannot join a group. Certainly perched in pot 1, Bima Sakti’s team avoided finding themselves in the same group as Brazil, the reigning champion. Indonesia will also not join world champions Mexico and France.

However, there are still strong teams in Pot 2 that could be in the same group as the Indonesian U-17 national team. One of them is England, who won the U-17 World Cup in 2017. Other strong countries that could be in the same group with our country are Argentina and Germany.

“The potential of a group with a strong national team is certainly there. However, I believe that in sport, especially in team games, the key is cooperation and courage. We often see during the World Cup World, the best team is beaten by the national team. The national team also goes to Germany “to add non-technical things to the team so that they get used to fighting foreign teams, so that they have courage and that she continues to fight until the final whistle”, emphasized Erick.

The 2023 U-17 World Cup brought together 24 participants. They passed the qualifying rounds in their respective confederations. Later, the 24 teams will be divided into six groups, from Group A to Group F, with each group containing four teams.

The two teams that finish the group stage in the top two positions will automatically qualify for the round of 16. They have the opportunity to continue advancing as far as possible after exiting the group stage.

Apart from this, there is a quota for four teams occupying the best third place. They can also qualify for the round of 16. Later, a separate ranking will be created for the third place finishers in the group stage. Whoever has the best points record, the best goal difference and/or the best fair play has the right to qualify for the round of 16.

It can be said that the competition in this edition of the tournament is very tight. Elite countries of world football such as Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, England and Spain took part. Apart from that, don’t forget countries that have a good history in youth tournaments like Japan, Mexico, Senegal and Mali.

FIFA officially named Indonesia as the new host of the U-17 World Cup on Friday 23/6/2023. This prestigious event will be held from November 10 to December 2, 2023.

The 2023 U-17 World Cup was initially held in Peru. However, the South American country withdrew due to unprepared infrastructure. The matches of this event are scheduled to take place at Manahan Stadium (Solo), Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (Surabaya), Si Jalak Harupat Stadium (Bandung) and Jakarta International Stadium (Jakarta), which, by the way, has been prepared for host the U-20 World Cup. .
