Liputan6.com, New Delhi – India will resume issuing visas to Canadian citizens if it sees progress in the security of its diplomats there. This was conveyed by Indian Foreign Minister (Menlu) S Jaishankar.
India suspended visa services for Canadian citizens in September 2023, saying security threats are disrupting the work of its mission in Canada. The two countries are at odds over the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Canada has previously said it takes the security of foreign diplomats seriously. However, Canada has not responded to India’s specific allegations regarding threats against its diplomats in Canada.
Relations between the two countries collapsed after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in September that his country was investigating credible allegations potentially linking India to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India has strongly rejected the allegations and called them absurd.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, was shot dead by two masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia in June. Hardeep Singh Nijjar is a strong supporter of Khalistan, the movement calling for an independent Sikh homeland.
