Iga Swiatek kills Leylah Annie Fernandez in Dubai

Tennis News: World number 1 tennis player Iga Swiatek did not face any major obstacles when he started the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships.

The Polish tennis player successfully won a 6-1, 6-1 landslide victory over Canadian tennis player Leylah Annie Fernandez in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Shortly after defending her title at the Qatar Open in Doha last week, the top seed fought for 72 minutes to take a 2-0 lead in her head to head against Annie Fernandez.

The 2022 US Open champion is not only undefeated against the 2021 US Open runner-up, but also against a Canadian tennis player. He is now 4-0 against the Canadiens in his career to date.

The Pole’s last victory over Annie Fernandez before meeting in Dubai this week was a 6-2 6-1 victory in Adelaide last season which also lasted 72 minutes.

“The match is not that easy, that’s for sure. More difficult than the final position. In the second set I had to improve my game. I didn’t have much time to get used to the conditions here, but I’m happy that I was able to play a solid game,” Swiatek said.

Now the tennis player who has won three Grand Slam titles has advanced to the third round in Dubai for the second time on his third visit. But he never went beyond that trick. To do so, she had to beat Liudmila Samsonova who progressed to the third round without having to swing a racket after her opponent Zheng Qinwen was forced out of the match with an abdominal muscle injury.

Swiatek and Samsonova have only met once before, where the win over Samsonova was the 22nd of 37 straight wins the top seed woke up in the first half of the 2020 season. She had conceded the first set before finally winning their meeting in the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open.

In the same match draw, Czech tennis player Karolina Pliskova also appeared dominant as she beat sixth seed Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-2.

For a place in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, Pliskova will face Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina who beat her compatriot Dayana Yastremska 5-7 6-2 6-3.
