Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Congratulations to Canadian national team manager John Herdman for bringing the country’s national team back to the World Cup stage for the second time, after their last appearance in 1986.

Les Rouges (The Reds), nicknamed the Canadian national team, made their World Cup debut in Mexico in 1986. In the group stage, the Canadian team was eliminated without getting a single point after losing against the Russia (formerly the Soviet Union), France and Hungary.

The loss left Canada bottom of the group. They failed to even score against their opponents and conceded five goals.

Now they have won tickets to the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Will Mexico’s World Cup experience be repeated? Many observers said the close competition in qualifying would be valuable experience for Canada to avoid repeating their misfortune in Mexico.

The certainty of a ticket to Qatar was secured by the Canadian national team after defeating Jamaica 4-0 at BMO Field, Toronto on March 27, 2022. With the win, Canada topped the finals of the CONCACAF qualifying zone competition.

In the last match, Canada lost 0-1 against Panama thanks to a goal from Gabriel Torres (49′). Despite the loss, Canada is not shaken from the top of the standings. They collected 28 points from 14 matches, the same as Mexico but higher on goal difference. The third position that passed from the CONCACAF zone is the United States with 25 points.

The first position shows that the quality of the Canadian national team cannot be underestimated. They have proven victorious in eight of their 14 games, including recording upset victories over the top-seeded United States and Mexico.

Canadian players celebrate their qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after defeating Jamaica, 4-0, on Sunday March 27, 2022.

After successfully leading his team to qualify for the World Cup, Herdman had to design and assign 26 players in a short period of time to perform their duties optimally representing this country in the North American region.

In Qatar, Canada is in Group F with Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

Team Canada’s biggest weakness is experience. Their experience of reaching their first World Cup dates back to 1986, so none of today’s players have played in a major FIFA international tournament before.

Moreover, most of the players came from national teams or smaller European clubs. There are just three players on the projected list, playing in Europe’s big five leagues, and only a handful with Champions League experience.

Looking at the map of Group F forces, the opponents against Canada are quite tough. Belgium and Croatia are tough teams in Europe, the best chance to steal points and not go deep is against Morocco.

star player
Judging by the breakdown of players who competed, there are two of the most prominent players on the Canadian national team. Both competed for European clubs. They are Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Jonathan David (Lille). Both also stood out and played a part in Canada winning the World Cup ticket in Qatar.

Davies actually played as a full-back at his Munich club, but he was often deployed in a more advanced role for the national team, either as a full-back with a back three or as a winger. However, he can play from the back when needed, providing defensive acumen as well as world-class attacking service in wide areas.

Jonathan David, meanwhile, is one of Europe’s hottest young attacking stars and should be on many clubs’ books once the season is over.

Born in Brooklyn, New York to Haitian parents, David emigrated to Canada at the age of six and has represented Canada since his youth. Today, he is a scorer at the Lille club.

Jonathan David has developed a flawless attacking partnership with Cyle Larin in the national team.

Coach
John Herdman is the current head coach (manager) of the Canadian national football team. She accepted the job in 2018. John Herdman was among the first managers to successfully lead the women’s and men’s national teams to qualify for the World Cup.

One of Herdman’s strengths is his ability to bring the team together. Herdman has been very successful in cultivating a culture of togetherness in the locker room that allows teams to compete on the pitch and enjoy national team life off it.
