Tennis News: Emma Raducanu will return to competition competing in the 2023 season of the Stuttgart Open with hopes of playing as well as last season.
Last season’s Stuttgart Open was the Briton’s first clay-court tournament and he did well to pick up a few wins before falling to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals in straight sets.
This season, the 2021 US Open champion will return to host the Stuttgart Open which will feature a number of other great players in addition to himself. The tournament will be her first tournament since losing to Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu in three sets at the Miami Open.
“I have good memories from last season and I played well, it was a fun tournament and a very good race. So I’m really looking forward to returning to Stuttgart,” said Raducanu.
The 20-year-old is expected to be one of the biggest entrants at the Stuttgart Open this season and it shows the popularity of the tournament.
The Stuttgart tournament offers a unique experience by being an indoor clay tournament, so things are a little faster than the usual clay courts. Basically, tennis fans don’t see too many clay court tournaments that are held indoors like the tournament in Stuttgart.
“Personally, I like to test myself and measure myself against the best tennis players in the world. So, it’s a challenge that I like. The game is a bit faster than in outdoor tournaments on clay, like in Rome , and I think it suits my game. This tournament is a great way to start the clay season, so hopefully the tournament will prepare me well and help with the transition to clay courts.” explained Raducanu.
The opener in Stuttgart will be Raducanu’s first game on clay since last season, but he started preparing early by starting training. The tennis player’s participation in Stuttgart was not without controversy after she would not be on court for a few days before England’s clash in the Billie Jean King Cup, a point many in her country native have questioned.
