REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OTTAWA — The Canadian government has appointed its country’s first special representative to combat Islamophobia. As reported Q107, On Friday (1/27/2023), Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first Special Representative to Combat Islamophobia.
Elghawaby is currently Director of Strategic Communications and Campaigns at the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, a charitable organization and Crown corporation with a mandate to work to eliminate racism. He is a member of the National Security Transparency Advisory Group and a columnist for Toronto Star. Previously, he was a founding board member of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Elghawaby will advise the government to help develop inclusive policies, legislative proposals, programs and regulations.
“The appointment of Ms. Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative to combat Islamophobia is an important step in our fight against Islamophobia and hatred in all its forms,” Trudeau said in a statement.
“I look forward to working with him as we continue to build a country where everyone feels safe and respected.”
According to Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy, Islamophobia is defined as encompassing racism, stereotyping, prejudice, fear or acts of hostility directed against Muslims. The creation of the role of Special Representative was recommended during the Virtual National Summit on Islamophobia to be held in July 2021.
The application process for the position began in June 2022 and Elghawaby was selected following an open, transparent and merit-based process. The announcement of Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative to combat Islamophobia precedes January 29.
January 29 is the National Memorial Day for the Attack on the Quebec City Mosque and Action Against Islamophobia, scheduled for 2021. The day marks the grim anniversary of the 2017 attack by a gunman on a mosque. of Quebec which left six dead and 19 injured.
