Canada bans Revolutionary Guards and Iranian regime from entering its territory

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he will include – under Canadian immigration and refugee laws – more than 10,000 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and senior Iranian officials on an entry ban list. in Canada.

He stressed that this measure was the strongest action Canada could take against a country or state entity, while stressing that policies like this had previously only been taken against regimes that had committed a genocide or war crimes.

Individuals on the list will be permanently prohibited from entering Canada and from owning or holding any assets or conducting financial activities in the country.

At least 92 people have died in Iran since September 16, according to a report by the Oslo-based organization Iran Human Rights. Meanwhile, official Iranian government figures put the death toll at around 60, including 12 members of the security forces.

Thousands of people in Canada have taken to the streets in recent weeks in demonstrations of solidarity following the death of Mahsa Amini following torture by Iran’s moral police.

Ottawa has imposed sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program and last week Prime Minister Trudeau announced new sanctions against dozens of Iranian officials, including the moral police.

Canada is also urging Tehran to compensate the families of the victims of flight PS752 shot down in January 2020, which killed 176 people, including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

“The Iranian regime is state-sponsored terrorism. The regime is repressive, theocratic and misogynistic,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland told a news conference, quoted AFP.

“We officially acknowledge this fact and are taking appropriate action accordingly,” he said.

Trudeau and Freeland also said Ottawa would impose broad economic sanctions against Iranian individuals and entities and take steps to prevent money laundering by them into Canada.
