Tennis News: Canada have booked their 2022 Davis Cup semi-final match in Malaga against Italy after winning the deciding doubles match against Germany.

Canada, reinforced by Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov, did what the other teams couldn’t and gave the defeat to the German team, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz. After losing the first set, the Canadian team struggled to turn the tide before eventually claiming the victory 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The win was redemptive for Shapovalov who previously lost to Germany’s 152nd-ranked tennis player in the world, Jan Lennard Struff 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.

In the second singles match, Felix Auger Aliassime brought hope to Canada after he managed to snatch a 7-6, 6-4 win over German tennis player Oscar Otte.

With the win over Germany, Canada will advance to the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time since the 2019 season, when it finished second after losing to Spain.

“We were lucky when Felix gave us a glimmer of hope,” Shapovalov said. “He saved us. Then it’s always a pleasure to play with Vasek. It’s always great to share the pitch with him and we can put in some convincing matches.”

Pospisil added: “We picked up a bit of momentum and found the crowd support really helped us keep that momentum going until the end. It’s a challenge to be precise on the pitch, but with the situation we had, I think we played very well.”

The captain of the Canadian team, Franck Dancevic did not forget to congratulate the members of his team.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” exclaimed Dancevvic. “We had to fight very hard. Germany are an incredible team and we have to play well. My team members are doing a great job. Our support staff are great too. Everyone put all their energy into it. I am very proud of them. We will come back and prepare for the next round.

Canada will face Italy for a berth in the Davis Cup final after Filippo Volandri’s side took on the loss to Team USA.
