Football News: Carlo Ancelotti was hoping to back Italy at the 2022 World Cup but the Real Madrid boss has revealed he will now back Canada after the Azzurri failed to qualify.
The Euro 2020 winners will miss the Middle East after suffering a shock play-off loss to North Macedonia.
Roberto Mancini’s men will miss the 2022 World Cup, their second successive absence, which means Ancelotti and his compatriots will have to look for an alternative side to the underdog.
Canada will be in the World Cup final for the first time since 1986 and, after dominating the CONCACAF qualifiers, this is the team Ancelotti backs, having married businessman Mariann Barrena McClay in 2014 and wanting to watch it.
The Italian tactician said Rai Radio“At the World Cup I will be supporting Canada, they have been away for many years and this is my second home.
“Then their federation president was from Abruzzo, so everyone was supporting Canada.”
Ancelotti is yet to make his international debut, having spent his entire coaching career at club level with AC Milan, Juventus, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
After leading Real Madrid to win the ‘La Decima’ Champions League, he is now back in the Spanish capital in search of more La Liga and European titles.
He has a contract with Los Blancos until 2024 and insists he can retire rather than return to Milan, it’s his only priority at the moment.
Ancelotti said: “I will talk about it the day I leave Real Madrid. If I stop with Real Madrid in 20 years, I think I can retire instead of going to Milan.
“Milan are one of the few teams that I keep in my heart because they raised me: not as a player, but as a coach. As a manager? Maldini has done an incredible job. He doesn’t don’t need a second.”
