Canada summons Russian ambassador following attack on Ukrainian civilians

TEMPO.CO, JakartaCanada called the ambassador Russia, Wednesday, following an attack on an apartment in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine, which left at least 45 people dead, including children. This was revealed by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly as reported Reuters Thursday January 19, 2023.

“Ambassador Oleg Stepanov’s summons was made to make it clear that Canada’s position is not to accept the brutality of the recent Russian attack on civilians on the Dnipro,” Joly told reporters in Toronto.

Stepanov said on another occasion that the discussion at the meeting focused on predictable Western propaganda. He pointed out that the differences between Moscow and Ottawa left little room for diplomacy.

Stepanov, speaking to the Russian press by phone, said Russia and Canada had deep differences over Ukraine and talks had not resulted in an agreement on their assessment.

The attack on an apartment building on the Dnipro on Saturday was the deadliest attack on civilians by a Russian missile bombardment in three months.

Ukraine reports that the building was hit by a Russian Kh-22 missile. Meanwhile, the Russian president’s office, the Kremlin, said Saturday’s wave of missile attacks did not target residential buildings.

Canada, like other Western countries, imposed broad sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Joly said Ottawa will continue to hold Moscow accountable.

Earlier Wednesday, Canada announced it would deliver 200 armored vehicles to Ukraine as part of its military assistance.

“We will continue to trap the Russian regime with coordinated sanctions and we will continue to counter Russian lies with facts,” Joly said, speaking alongside British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

Consistent with Joly, Cleverly said he would continue to support Ukraine. He was in Toronto after meeting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington on Tuesday.

The Canadian and British armies are also training new Ukrainian troops in Britain. Joly also said more Canadian experts would join the UK government’s information cell to tackle what he described as Russian disinformation.
