Canadian world champion Felix Auger Aliassime shares his joy with his father

Tennis News: Felix Auger Aliassime has become one of the heroes Canada needed after helping his country win the Davis Cup title for the first time.

A 6-3 6-4 win over Australian international Alex De Minaur sealed Canada’s fortunes in this season’s Davis Cup against Australia with a 2-0 win.

Denis Shapovalov led the way for Canada when he defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis in another convincing victory, 6-2, 6-4, which gave Canada a 1-0 lead.

The 2022 Swiss Indoors champion in Basel, who won all eight sets he played in the Davis Cup knockout stage this season, was emotional and he relaxed as he hugged his father who was present on the site after his historic victory.

“I saw an opportunity. I thought, this is it. I’m after this. I see an open field. I was like, ‘Okay, shoot’. After I saw the ball in the air, I thought, “No, he’s going to come out. My legs are going limp. Me, my legs are helpless. Seeing Frank and all the people running towards me screaming, it was incredible. Yes, it was really a special moment,” exclaimed Auger Aliassime.

The 2022 Rotterdam Open champion saw De Minaur return a forehand wide before dropping down the court. The Canadian team, including team captain Frank Dancevic, immediately approached his team members for joyful celebrations.

“You have a lot of games over the seasons, but a day like this you will remember for a long time. So it will be a special moment,” added Auger Aliassime.

The 22-year-old cites Novak Djokovic as an example when asked what he can still develop as a tennis player. The Serbian national was among the spectators who watched the 22-year-old’s superb performance for Canada in Malaga, Spain.

“I’m not in a position at my age and level where I think about things I can improve. We just saw Novak here. He’s still trying to improve today and he’s won everything. this sport has to offer. They’ve all done it. They’re all role models. It’s the same for me and all the players here, I think we always want to improve and improve. That’s what happened to me,” Auger Aliassime explained.

“To be honest, I’m not going to think about what I can improve on. I’ll see it next season. At the moment, just be happy that I won it.
