Jokowi asks Erick Thohir to prepare the nomination of IKN to host the 2036 Olympics

TEMPO.CO, Nusa Dua – President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi ordered the Minister of Public Enterprises or BUMN Eric Thohir bridge the gap between discussions with the Committee Olympic International (IOC). The discussion mainly focused on the candidacy of the capital of the archipelago (IKN), East Kalimantan, as host of the Olympics in 2036.

The request to Erick was submitted after the President Jokowi made a statement regarding the nomination of the Olympic host.

“He contacted me and ordered to link the discussion with the IOC regarding the readiness of this bid,” Erick said, Wednesday evening, November 16, 2022. This was stated during a virtual press conference from Bali.

Erick Thohir said the Indonesian government is very serious about nominating IKN to host the Olympics to be held in the next 14 years.

In addition, Erick claims that Indonesia has managed to organize a number of international activities. The most recent major event, for example, has been a series of G20 presidency meetings over the past year.

He hoped that IKN’s appointment as the host of the 2036 Olympics could be one of the rounds to welcome Indonesia’s independence centenary in 2045.

While quoting IOC President Thomas Bach’s statement that sport can also create peace in the world, Erick said, the organization of this great celebration also aims to create peace.

This, he said, is in line with the Indonesian philosophy of unity in diversity. “Through this sport, this is one of the steps towards peace that we can take,” he said.

Therefore, Erick really hopes that the government will also take this nomination step very seriously. “I hope we can get the support of IOC members.”

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali said that Indonesia had in fact submitted a bid to host the 2032 Olympics. Unfortunately, Indonesia soon lost out to Australia, who named Brisbane.

“So if you are asked how serious it is, yes, we are very serious and experienced in organizing multi-branch sporting events such as the 2018 Asian Games,” Amali said.
