Japan will stage an all-American final in the capital on Sunday: after Frances Tiafoe reached the ATP World 500 final, her compatriot Taylor Fritz follows her in tomorrow’s deciding match. The 24-year-old Californian beat Denis Shapovalov 6:3, 6:7 (5), 6:3 in a thrilling fight.
The 23-year-old Canadian doesn’t have it easy. The current world number 22 particularly shone in the second half. With a powerful hammer forehand and great serve. But in the decider, Shapovalov lost his focus despite his first-half header, continuing to argue with himself and clearing the way for Fritz to his third final of the season.
The third man from Rancho Santa Fe in Tokyo accomplished another personal achievement with a hard-fought semi-final as he will feature in the world top 10 for the first time in his career on Monday. Success in the final will allow them to jump to ninth place.
