The Rohingya crisis must attract the attention of the international community

BORNEONEWS, Jakarta – Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said the Rohingya crisis should continue to preoccupy international public opinion.

“Our common task is to ensure that the international community continues to pay attention to the Rohingyas,” the foreign minister said in a conference call. High Level Side Event on Rohingya crisis on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Thursday (22/9).

As stated in a written statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Retno underlined three main things that the international community must do, namely, first, to create a situation conducive to the return of the Rohingya people; second, to ensure the safety and security of the Rohingya community in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh; and third, to promote peace and national reconciliation in Myanmar.

He also stressed the important role that ASEAN can play in restoring peace and stability in Myanmar.

“Indonesia, in this case, is committed to working with the international community to find lasting solutions to the Rohingya issue,” Retno said.

Promoting collaboration and shared responsibility to address the Rohingya crisis was also a key issue raised by a number of speakers at the meeting.
