Tommy Paul spoils Carlos Alcaraz’s 2022 Montreal Masters debut

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Tommy Paul ruined Carlos Alcaraz’s Canadian debut after toppling the second-seeded Spain 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 at the Montreal Masters on Wednesday local time .

The unseeded American converted her fifth match point to seal a second-half win in three hours and 20 minutes.

Alcaraz entered the tournament armed with two Masters 1000 titles from Miami and Madrid and holds a 42-7 win-loss record so far this season.

But Paul, ranked 34th in the world, volleyed the win after holding off the Spaniard 5-2 in the third set.

“It’s good to be able to finish this game in net,” said Paul, who scored 36 winners, compared to Alcaraz’s 33 winners. “I did a lot of things well today.”

“I’m happy to qualify and now I have to recover for tomorrow,” he continued on Thursday, quoted by AFP.

Fourth seed Casper Ruud bounced back from his loss to Alex Molcan earlier this season, beating the Slovak 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 in just under two hours.

The Norwegian, who holds three trophies so far, had to work hard to win the first set after losing serve trying to close it at 5-4.

Finally, Ruud needed a tiebreaker to win this fight. He sealed his place in the third round in straight sets, his 36th victory of the season.

“We faced each other in Munich, so we know each other’s game well,” Ruud said.

“He’s very fast and can cause trouble for everyone,” he added of Alex Molcan.
