kyiv, KOMPAS.com – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Sunday (06/08/2022) new arms and equipment assistance to Ukraine.

Trudeau made the statement at a press conference after a dialogue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during an unannounced visit to Kyiv.

Trudeau added that Canada had imposed new sanctions on a number of Russian individuals and entities in connection with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Additionally, Canada will also reopen its embassy in Kyiv, as reported Gulf today.

Trudeau said Russian President Vladimir Putin was responsible for war crimes.

“It is clear that Vladimir Putin is responsible for heinous war crimes,” Trudeau said during a press conference with the Ukrainian leader.

He added that he had witnessed firsthand the brutality of Russia’s illegal war.

Earlier in the day, Trudeau traveled to Irpin, where Russian troops are accused of committing atrocities against civilians there.

Mayor Irpin Oleksandr Markushyn uploaded Trudeau’s photo to social media. Trudeau’s office confirmed the visit.

“The Prime Minister is in Ukraine to meet with President Zelensky and reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people,” Trudeau’s office said.

Markushyn said Trudeau was given a tour of the town of Irpin which was badly damaged by Russian forces at the start of the invasion launched in late February.

Several Western political leaders, including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, recently visited Irpin and other residential areas around Kyiv, where Russian troops are accused of killing hundreds of civilians.

Trudeau’s visit comes on the same day as US First Lady Jill Biden makes an impromptu visit to Ukraine.
