In a statement posted to Instagram, the couple said they made the decision after numerous conversations. Both also asked the public to protect their family’s privacy.
“As always, we will remain a united family with deep love and respect for each other, and for all that we have built and will continue to build,” they said.
To quote Al Jazeera, Thursday (3/8), a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said that the couple signed a legal divorce agreement. They will have joint custody of the children.
According to the official who spoke anonymously, Trudeau and his children will continue to live at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, the prime minister’s official residence, where he has resided since 2015.
In the meantime, Grégoire Trudeau will be moving to another location in Ottawa, but plans to spend a lot of time with the children at Rideau Cottage.
“They remain a close family, and Grégoire and the Prime Minister strive to raise their children in a safe, loving and collaborative environment. The family will be together on vacation starting next week,” said a statement from the office of Trudeau.
Trudeau, who is currently 51 years old, was inaugurated in 2015. He was born into a family of well-known politicians in Canada.
Meanwhile, Grégoire Trudeau is a former model and television host. Both married in May 2005 and have three children aged 15, 14 and nine.
