Earlier, Christine Sinclair missed a penalty and a chance to make World Cup history as Olympic champions Canada were held 0-0 by Nigeria.
Switzerland, meanwhile, beat debutants Philippines 2-0 to take the lead in Group A.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie saved a valuable point for Nigeria, leaving Group B wide open, when he saved Sinclair’s 50th-minute penalty at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium.
Sinclair is keen to become the first player to score in six World Cups in Australia.
The Philippines women’s national soccer team, the Philippines, fell short but put on a dashing display in their historic opener against Switzerland at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The Philippines had shown a glimmer of hope early in the game when Katrina Guillou’s shot ended up in the net in the 15th minute. However, a video assistant referee ruled it an offside violation, so the goal was disallowed.
The third day of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, tomorrow there will be four matches, the United States against Vietnam, Zambia against Japan, England against Haiti and China against Denmark.
