Jakarta (ANTARA) – Women’s football at the 2024 Paris Olympics began its matches on Thursday evening (25/7) WIB.
A total of eight-six matches from three groups were played, with the opener being Canada v New Zealand in Group A and Spain v Japan in Group C, according to the official website of the 2024 Olympics. .
The 2020 Olympic gold medal winning team, Canada, successfully defeated New Zealand 2-1 in their opening group stage match at the Geoffrey-Guichard Stadium.
New Zealand took the lead thanks to Mackenzie Barry’s goal after just 13 minutes of the match.
However, Canada was still too strong for New Zealand after turning the tide. Canada’s equalizer was scored by CloĆ© Lacasse in the first half on a kick from the penalty box.
Canada’s winning goal came in the 79th minute. Jessie Fleming fired a cross which Evelyn Viens completed from a tight angle. The match ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of Canada against New Zealand.
In another Group A match, hosts France narrowly won 3-2 against Colombia. This result places France and Canada in the first two places in the provisional ranking of Group A.
Meanwhile, Spain completed a 2-1 comeback against Japan in their Group C opener at the Stade de la Beaujoire.
Japan opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Aoba Fujino’s free kick found the top right corner of the Spanish goal guarded by Cata Coll.
2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati equalized for Spain nine minutes later after finishing Athenea del Castillo’s ball.
Spain dominated possession in the second half and managed to overturn the advantage in the 74th minute thanks to Mariona Caldentey’s kick after receiving Bonmati’s cross. Spain successfully won in their opening match.
The result puts Spain temporarily top of Group C with three points, followed by Brazil who also won 1-0 against Nigeria in the other match.
The German national team also started the 2024 Olympic tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory over Australia in the opening match of Group B. Three German goals were scored by Marina Hegering, Lea Schueller and Jule Brand.
