THE CAP – The acronym BRICS originally started out as an optimistic term to describe the fastest growing economy in the world at the time.

But now the BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are gearing up as an alternative to the existing international financial and political forums.

This year’s BRICS summit will be held in South Africa. Today, the BRICS are emerging as a counterpoint to the economic and political might of the West to be reckoned with.

So what are the facts about the 2023 BRICS Summit in South Africa?

1. The myth of developing countries has faded

“The myth of the foundation of the developing world has faded,” Gunther Maihold, deputy director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, or SWP, told DW.

He explained, “BRICS countries are living their geopolitical moment.”

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are trying to position themselves as representatives of the global South, offering an “alternative model for the G7”.

The G7 is an “informal forum” of heads of state from the world’s most advanced economies, founded in 1975. Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States States (United States) are members, as is the European Union (EU). .
