Eid al-Fitr is a special moment expected every year by Muslims around the world. In hosting Eid, each country has a different tradition of celebrating this victory day
Thus, it is not only countries with a majority Muslim population that have a unique tradition of celebrating Eid, countries with a minority Muslim population also have their own Eid traditions.
So how is the tradition of celebrating Eid in a country where the Muslim religion is a minority? Here are five Eid traditions in Muslim minority countries.
1. China
China is a country where the majority of the population is not religious. However, the Chinese government recognizes five religions, namely Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Catholicism and Islam. However, Islam is a minority religion in the Land of the Bamboo Curtain.
On the day of Eid al-Fitr, Muslims in China celebrate Eid with a unique tradition of cleaning the ancestral graves of local Muslim leaders as a sign of respect. Additionally, Muslim men also wear white skullcaps wrapped in jackets, while women wear warm clothes and scarves.
2. Japan
Japan also celebrates Eid as Muslim communities in Indonesia generally do. Muslim residents of Japan will perform Eid al-Fitr prayers at mosques closest to their homes or at mosques around Tokyo. Mosques in Japan tend to be small in size, so for Eid al-Fitr prayers the congregation will usually be divided into several groups with a prayer time of 30 minutes per wave.
After the Eid al-Fitr prayer, Muslims in Japan will shake hands in hospitality and apology. Then continue to eat the dishes served by the mosque committee. Then Japanese Muslims also visit relatives and friends.
