Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Twitter re-enabled the blue tick for several media outlets and celebrities, as well as other profile accounts, on Saturday (4/22/2023).
The reactivation of the blue tick was made after its removal from social networks was opposed by many users.
Twitter has announced that the Blue Authenticity and Notoriety Marks which were previously obtained for free, must now be purchased by subscribers for US$8 per month or the equivalent of Rp 119,488.
The blue checkmark on the previous non-paying Twitter account disappeared Thursday, as CNA reported, Sunday (4/23/2023).
Twitter owner Elon Musk previously implemented a strategy dubbed “Twitter Blue” to generate new revenue, which the company announced last year.
Travis Brown, a Berlin-based software developer who tracks social media platforms, said only a small proportion of users marked with a blue tick had subscribed, less than 5% of the 407,000 profiles affected.
Despite this, a number of celebrities returned to the blue tick without further action on Friday (4/21/2023) and Saturday (4/22/2023).
Musk took to Twitter saying it was necessary to pay some (subscriptions) personally, Friday (4/21/2023).
American rapper Lil Nas X, whose profile has a blue checkmark, appeared to tweet about it. “God, I didn’t pay for blue twitter, you’ll feel my wrath tesla male!” he tweeted.
The accounts of several celebrities, such as American chef Anthony Bourdain, have also regained their blue tick. Many official media accounts get the blue tick, including those who are not Twitter Blue subscribers.
The New York Times regained its gold badge this month after Musk exposed the news organization as propaganda.
The Times is one of the leading media groups that has a golden tick for legitimate business accounts that pay at least $1,000 per month.
However, the blue tick did not restore the accounts of US public radio NPR and Canadian public broadcaster CBC, which recently suspended activity on their accounts and did not resume tweeting on Sunday (23/4/2023 ).
