Pope The last killer whale to live in a pond named Kiska has died in Canada. Pope the 47-year-old has been dubbed the “loneliest whale in the world”.

reported from NPR, the news of Kiska’s death first emerged on Thursday (3/16) local time. Kiska had lived in ponds for four decades since she was captured from the wild in 1979 in Icelandic waters.

Kiska was captured with another whale, Keiko who starred in the movie Free Willy. Several reports from animal rights activists stated that Kiska died from a bacterial infection.

However, no specific cause can be confirmed.

Kiska caught many people’s attention after her video went viral on social media. Due to her loneliness, Kiska allegedly deliberately banged her head against the wall next to the pool.

According to People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Kiska has had issues since living at the amusement park. This was compounded by the death of five of her babies and the move of her pool mate, Ikaika, in 2011.

“It’s sad to know that Kiska never had the chance to be relocated to the whale sanctuary and experience the freedom she so deserves,” said Camille Labchuck, executive director of Animal Justice.

Camille added that she sought justice after the treatment Kiska received at Marineland, where Kiska lives.

“We call on the provincial authorities to release the results of the post-mortem analysis and to punish Marineland for the frustrations experienced by Kiska during the last years of her life,” Camille said. Radio Canada.

Previously, in July 2017, Animal Justice filed a legal complaint regarding Marineland’s behavior. They accused Marineland of breaking the law because they failed to meet Kiska’s physical and mental needs.

The lawsuit was filed after a video showing Kiska struggling to move and just floating was uploaded by a former Marineland trainer, Phil Demers.

At the end of the same year, Marineland also faced criminal charges after Animal Justice filed another complaint alleging the dolphins had been forced to perform for entertainment despite a nationwide ban. The charges were stayed in December 2022.
