French League News: Lille midfielder Remy Cabella has backed team-mate Jonathan David to become Ligue 1’s top scorer this season.
Speaking after Lille’s 3-0 win over Ajaccio in Week 33 of Ligue 1 at the weekend, Remy Cabella made a special mention of team-mate Jonathan David. The 33-year-old midfielder hailed the Canadian striker’s work ethic and backed him to become Ligue 1’s top scorer this season.
“He’s a top-level striker. In training he works hard, I see that because we train together in front of goal. He’s had a very good season and he’s a striker with a lot of quality. This year he has raised the level of his game again,” Cabella said for David.
David is currently second in the Ligue 1 goalscoring charts with 21 goals. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe is still on top with 23 goals. Cabella knows it will be difficult for David to beat a player of Mbappe’s caliber but he and his teammates will do their best to help the striker do it.
“I yell at him when he misses a chance because I don’t want him to miss it, especially when I pass the ball to him. He’s a very good striker. I hope he performs better at the end of the season. I hope he wins games for us because he’s a great player. I’ll try to put him in a good position, that’s my role. Apart from that, he’s a very good person, so I really enjoyed playing with him this year.”
“I hope he ends up top scorer. It’s going to be tough because in front of him there’s a monster, arguably the best player in the world, but it’s just a matter of how we can put him in a good position. position. It’s a big duel and we’re going to give it our all,” he continued.
David still has a chance to catch and overtake Mbappe’s goal tally in the remaining five matches. The last time he was top scorer in the Belgian league was for Ghent, just a season before his arrival at Lille.
