Jakarta, CNNIIndonesia —
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) officially prohibits employees from downloading social media apps ICT Tac devices provided by these alliance agencies for security reasons.
NATO officials announced the ban in a note sent to staff on Friday (3/31) morning.
Even so, according to a NATO official, TikTok is not actually usable on previously NATO-issued devices due to internal technology restrictions.
“Cybersecurity is a top priority for NATO. NATO has strong requirements to designate apps for official business use. TikTok is not accessible on NATO devices,” a senior NATO official said. NATO. CNN.
NATO is the latest government agency to ban the app over fears the Chinese government could gain access to TikTok user data through its Chinese parent company, Bytedance.
Previously, the United States, United Kingdom, Norway, European Parliament and other countries banned the application of government-issued devices.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew stressed to US lawmakers earlier this month that the company was completely independent from Beijing, saying he “sees no evidence that the Chinese government has access to the data; they don’t tell us. never ask, we don’t provide them”.
He added that TikTok transfers its data to the United States, to be stored in the United States by the American company Oracle.
“So the risks would be similar to any government going to American companies to ask for data,” he said.
However, Western governments remain skeptical.
TikTok must “one way or another end,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Congress earlier this month in a separate hearing on the same day Chew testified.
“Clearly, we, the government and others are facing the challenges it poses and are taking action to address them.”
CNN has reached out to TikTok for comment regarding this latest case.
