Fires are still very active in Alberta, western Canada, as warmer weather and storms are expected starting this Friday, May 12. Already, the military is working hard to support the work of firefighters in other Canadian provinces, but also in neighboring American states such as Oregon and Alaska. With fire season arriving earlier and earlier in this part of Canada, a recently released report suggests the country is unprepared for natural disasters.
In Canada as elsewhere, floods, fires and landslides sometimes have a dramatic effect on populations. However, this fact is still very poorly documented according to the recently published National Risk Profile.
Even though thousands of houses are flooded each year, we do not know the psycho-social impact of such a situation on the inhabitants. In addition, three-quarters of claims incurred are not insurable.
Another difficulty is the lack of communication between the central authorities of the city, the province and the state in the event of an emergency. This slows down decisions and blurs communication. Not to mention that the existing infrastructure does not take risk reduction into account, while the climate here is warming twice as fast as the global average.
Better preparedness for natural disasters caused by climate change is evident.
