The story begins when a Muslim man, who identified himself as Ahmad, told Ottawa television station CTV that a security guard – who was contracted to work on Canada’s Via Rail – came to him after he finished praying and said “don’t pray here.”
“Don’t pray here. We don’t want you praying here. You’re disturbing our other customers, okay? Please pray outside next time,” the security guard said as quoted by IndependentSaturday (25/3/2023).
The incident happened in the Canadian capital on Monday and Ahmed shared the story last Thursday with the media.
Video of the incident was also recorded by an eyewitness which later went viral and sparked outrage on social media.
The video shows the security guard telling the Muslim man that his prayers disturbed other people at the station.
Via Rail and the National Council of Canadian Muslims, a civil rights group, issued a joint statement saying they met to discuss what they described as a regrettable and sad incident.
The statement said they engaged in a constructive dialogue following an unfortunate and distressing incident involving a man praying at the Via Rail station in Ottawa.
