The Omaha Service Bureau said smoke from the fire was beginning to move into the Lincoln and Omaha metro areas.

“Visibility will drop to 1-2 miles in the next few hours and air quality will enter an unhealthy range for sensitive groups,” he said.

In Douglas County in eastern Nebraska, which includes Omaha, the health department warned that smoke could linger through Saturday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index shows that parts of the Rockies, Great Plains and Midwest, including the Nebraska Panhandle and the northeast corner of the state, had “very unhealthy” air quality on Friday morning (5/19/2023).
