Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Meta will pilot news content restrictions for a number of users in Canada, in response to the country’s online news law.
This trial was conducted before there was a final blockage, if the law was approved.
Under the rule, known as Bill C-18, platforms such as Meta and Google must negotiate with Canadian news publishers to pay for access to content.
However, Meta prefers to block news content on its platforms such as Instagram and Facebook in this country, rather than having to pay.
To quote EdgesSunday (4/6/2023), ABC News reported, this lawsuit is expected to impact one to five percent of Facebook and Instagram users in Canada.
Affected users of the Meta platform will not be able to view or share news content on social media. Canadian and international news media will also be affected.
“We have made the difficult decision that when this flawed law is passed, we will have to discontinue the availability of news content on Facebook and Instagram in Canada,” Meta president of global affairs Nick Glegg said last month.
Meanwhile, Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Heritage, said the trials conducted by Meta on Instagram and Facebook were unacceptable.
