A large humpback whale caught in shark nets off Australia’s Gold Coast was released last week after a dangerous rescue operation. After reports of a humpback whale caught in nets at Mermaid Beach arrived on June 5, it sparked an urgent rescue operation to rescue the creature from harm.
A video of the rescue has been posted on Sea World’s official Facebook page in Gold Coast Australia.
Join the Sea World Foundation team as they join Queensland fisheries agency MART in a complex rescue operation to successfully free a 10-metre-long adult humpback whale from a control program’s net sharks on Mermaid Beach this morning. The whale was reported on Monday afternoon, but with bad weather, sea and light conditions, rescue teams left before dawn this morning to begin operations,” Sea World wrote explaining the incident. .
Notably, the rescue team worked collaboratively to successfully free the whale from both vessels using special cutting equipment to remove all of the netting from the whale’s head and pectoral fins in about an hour. .
They also explained that such rescue operations were extremely dangerous due to the team handling large animals weighing up to 30 tons, as well as sea and weather conditions. “So for the safety of rescue teams and animals, it should only be attempted by trained institutions,” their message concluded.
