F1 News: George Russell thinks Lewis Hamilton is still capable of staying in F1 for a few more years, referring to his fitness and ability on the track.
As already announced, Lewis Hamilton will soon extend his tenure at Mercedes by signing a new contract. Even though he has not been on the main podium for 18 months, he is still aiming for success.
The seven-time F1 world champion is likely to remain loyal to the Silver Arrows as they have achieved many achievements together. Hamilton has reportedly received a €40m offer from Ferrari to join in 2024.
In an interview ahead of the Canadian GP weekend, George Russell gave his thoughts on the partner’s new contract.
“Just look at his skin – he looks like he’s 25! I think I have more wrinkles than him,” he said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“I think there’s still a lot of years left in Lewis and I think he’s at that point in his career as long as he continues to love racing and he sees an opportunity to win so why not keep going. We both believe in this team,” the 25-year-old continued.
“He’s still playing at a very high level and we’re pushing each other. And it’s an exciting time for this sport, so he’ll be there for years to come,” Russell said.
In the previous series, the Spanish GP, Mercedes had their best weekend in F1 by finishing second and third. However, Russell doubted his team could continue this positive trend at the Canadian GP due to the different level of difficulty on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
“It’s a very different circuit. Barcelona, with the new changes, it’s all medium/high speed corners. In Montreal, everything is slow corner. Barcelona has a very smooth Tarmac. It’s very bumpy here , we hit the whole sidewalk, it’s a street track,” Russell said.
“And finally, in Barcelona we have the three hardest tires and here we have the three softest tyres. So there is no guarantee that we will be competitive – or as competitive as we were at Barcelona. At best, I hope to be close enough to us, Aston Martin and Ferrari.”
