F1 News: Max Verstappen admits he was interested in testing F1 cars with Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo at the Nurburgring circuit but was banned.
Red Bull Racing has just announced that its former driver, Sebastian Vettel, has signed a contract to appear alongside third-rate driver Daniel Ricciardo at a special event at the Nurburgring circuit in September. Vettel will drive the 2011 RB7 car, while Ricciardo will drive the RB8 car.
In an interview ahead of the Canadian GP, Max Verstappen admitted he persuaded Die Roten Bullen adviser Helmut Marko to be allowed to take part. Unfortunately, he didn’t get Marko’s blessing.
“I wanted to do it, but Helmut didn’t allow me. He knew I would try to push my limits. I really wanted to do it,” Verstappen said as quoted by Motorsport.com.
Although the 25-year-old still had a chance to talk to Marko again, he chose to give up as he didn’t want to cause any trouble.
“I don’t want to create unnecessary problems. I heard this thing was going to happen, and Helmut was sitting at the table when it happened, and he said, ‘No, no, no, you can’t do that!’ says Verstappen.
Even if the program followed by Vettel and Ricciardo was just for show, Max Verstappen thinks the pair will be tempted to try and break the fastest lap record. The all-time Nurgburgring record is currently still held by Timo Bernhard with a time of 5 minutes 19.55 seconds in the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo in 2018.
“I will definitely try it. But you don’t need demo tires (which the team has to use) and proper tyres, which are not allowed,” Verstappen said.
The young Dutchman also thinks that racing on the Nordschleife with an old car is just as dangerous if it is cobbled on other tracks.
“Driving here is also risky. It depends on how you hit the barrier. However, that’s usually not my plan, of course. But I hope one day I can do it,” he said. he concluded.
