Liputan6.com, Beijing – China announced the expulsion of a Canadian diplomat on Tuesday (05/09/2023). This decision was in retaliation for similar actions by Canada.
Canada expels Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei accused of intimidating MP Michael Chong and his family. These allegations stem from Chong’s criticism of China’s treatment of the Uyghur ethnic minority.
China’s Foreign Ministry said it is pursuing countermeasures for Canada’s immoral acts which it strongly opposes. Canadian diplomat in Shanghai, Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, was expelled on May 13 and China has stressed that it reserves the right to take further action in response.
In a statement posted on its website, the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa said the expulsion of its diplomat was based on rumors of interference in Canadian internal affairs that were relayed by some politicians and media.
“It flagrantly violates the rules of international law, basic norms governing international relations and related bilateral agreements, and sabotages China-Canada relations,” the statement said. PA, Tuesday.
The Chinese Embassy added that all consequences arising therefrom would be borne entirely by Canada.
“China has never interfered in the internal affairs of other countries,” the Chinese embassy said.
Allegations of intimidation against Chong and his family in 2021 were revealed in a report by a Canadian intelligence agency first published by The Globe and Mail. Chong himself has criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government for being slow to respond to his case.
Zhao’s expulsion, Chong said, should have happened years ago.
“I hope this sends a clear message not only to China, but also to other authoritarian nations represented here in Canada, that crossing the lines of diplomacy in activities that threaten foreign interference is simply not acceptable here on the Canadian soil,” Chong said.
