National Para-Badminton Team Wins Four Gold Medals in Canada

JAKARTA, NusaBali – The Indonesian national para-badminton team won four gold, three silver and three bronze medals at the Canadian International Para-Badminton Championships, in Ottawa from June 14-18, 2023. The event is specifically intended for Indonesian para-badminton athletes to earn points for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

The Deputy Secretary General of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Indonesia, Rima Ferdianto, is grateful for this achievement. According to him, the national para-badminton team had just finished competing in the Tier 1 event with the highest Paralympic points weight.

Four gold medals in mixed doubles SH6 on behalf of Subhan/Rina Marlina, Hikmat Ramdani/Leani Ratri Oktila in mixed doubles SL3 – SU5, Qonitah Ikhtiar in women’s singles SL3 and Rina Marlina in women’s singles SH6.

Meanwhile, three silver medals were presented by Khalimatus Sa’diyah (women’s singles SL4), Leani Ratri/Khalimatus (women’s doubles SL3-SU5) and mixed doubles SL3-SU5 Fredy Setiawan/Khalimatus. Bronze won by Fredy Setiawan and Hikmat Ramdani (SL4 men’s singles) and Dheva Anrimusti in SU5 men’s singles.

Leani Ratri Oktila, who competed in three numbers, said that in the championship all the players showed their best game so that every game was close from the first round.

“I’m definitely very happy to finally be able to give my best,” said Leani Ratri.

Additionally, Leani Ratri was able to contribute to a mixed doubles gold medal with Hikmat Ramdani, although during the tournament Hikmat competed in makeshift sparring gear. Indeed, Hikmat lost his suitcase when he landed in Canada.

“Yes, it’s a pity, my double mix partner lost his suitcase when landing here. All match materials and documents are in the suitcase. This incident is very disturbing. Even so, my partner had a hard time with material that had to be borrowed everywhere,” Ratri said.

Great appreciation was also given to Indonesian citizens in Canada for the support given to Indonesian athletes during their participation in the championship. The achievements of the Indonesian National Para-Badminton Team in Canada were also appreciated by Para-Badminton Coach Jarot Hernowo. The reason is that their trip to Canada is somewhat extraordinary.

All athletes participating are ASEAN Paralympic Games (APG) Cambodia 2023 athletes. They fly directly from Cambodia to Canada without having to return to Indonesia first.

“The main obstacle faced by the athletes is of course the problem of recovery, because previously the athletes appeared in APG directly in Canada and the journey was long,” said Jarot Hernowo.
