Canada, Beritasatu.com – Meta announced it would limit access to information on its platform to Canadian consumers after Parliament approved a controversial online information law.
The law required major platforms to compensate news publishers for content published on their sites.
Meta and Google have piloted limiting news access to certain users in Canada.
In 2021, Australian users were blocked from sharing or viewing news on Facebook in response to a similar law.
Canada’s Online News Act, passed by the Senate on Thursday (6/22/2023), includes rules that force platforms like Meta and Google to trade commercial news and pay news outlets for their content.
Meta calls this law “a deeply flawed law that ignores the realities of how our platform operates.”
On Thursday, Meta announced that news availability would be halted on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada before the law takes effect.
