So far this year, 2.7 million hectares of forest in Canada burned. This number is 8 times higher than the average of forest fires in Canada over the past 3 decades.
“These conditions at the start of this season are unprecedented and of course very concerning for all Canadians,” Canada’s Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair said at a press conference. AFPFriday (2/6/2023).
There are currently 211 wildfires in Canada, including 82 fires that are out of control. The fire was caused by an extreme heat wave and strong winds.
In Nova Scotia, 16 fires broke out on Thursday (1/6). The fire forced the evacuation of more than 16,000 local residents.
Another fire near Lake Barrington posed a challenge to firefighters. The reason is that the fire burned more than 20,000 hectares of forest. More than 2,000 residents were forced to flee.
“We are far out of the jungle. We are still facing a very dangerous and unstable situation,” said local natural resources officer David Steeves.
“We need luck to be on our side,” he added.
Smoke from the fires has blanketed much of the province and is blowing across the Atlantic coast, triggering an air quality warning for the US state of New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania, including the Philadelphia area .
In Western Canada, more than 60 fires are still burning in Alberta.
