Canada – A mysterious and deadly brain disease is “attacking” residents of the Canadian province of New Brunswick, which is of growing concern to health authorities.
The disease causes neurological symptoms such as hallucinations, muscle wasting, vision problems, memory loss, and abnormal movements. The first case was detected in 2015 in a small group of patients, which eventually grew to 48 cases.
But some health experts and local residents say the number of people with the disease is much higher and could now exceed 200.
Health officials are increasingly concerned that brain disorders affect young people more.
“I am deeply concerned about the growing number of early and early onset neurological syndromes,” neurologist Dr. Alier Marrero wrote in a letter dated January 30, 2023 to New Brunswick’s Chief Medical Officer of Health and Administrator chief of federal public health.
“Over the past year, I have followed 147 cases, ranging in age from 17 to 80. Of these, 57 were early onset cases and 41 were early onset cases,” Marrero wrote, according to Toronto Star.
