Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Recently, the mining company Norge Mining found reserves of 70 billion tons of minerals phosphate In Norway. It is estimated that the number of discoveries will be able to meet the global demand for electric vehicle batteries and solar panels for the next 100 years.
Phosphates have long been widely used as a raw material for the manufacture of fertilizers. However, over time, phosphate also began to be used for electric vehicles, notably in the form of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
Meanwhile, Indonesia is currently a phosphate importing country from several countries. However, citing the Indonesian Minerals Yearbook 2018 published by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources), Indonesia also has potential phosphate resources totaling 23.33 million tons and distributed in several provinces.
So far, the phosphate resource in Indonesia is a type of phosphate guano, occurring in East Java, West Java, Central Java, Aceh, South Kalimantan and West Papua . Guano phosphate is formed from the accumulation of dissolved secretions of fish-eating birds and bats and reacts with limestone under the influence of rainwater and groundwater.
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the largest phosphate rock resources are found in East Java. East Java is identified as having 15.4 million tonnes of hypothetical phosphate resources, 27,000 tonnes of inferred phosphate resources and 31,970 tonnes of measured phosphate resources.
Hypothetical phosphate resources have also been identified in West Java 2.5 million tons, Central Java 703,750 tons, East Nusa Tenggara 120,090 tons, South Kalimantan 166,200 tons, Aceh 141 000 tonnes, East Kalimantan 2,100 tonnes and South Sulawesi 1,500 tonnes.
At the same time, indicated resources were identified in West Papua which reached 4.1 million tonnes and Central Java 12,400 tonnes.
Citing Volume 5 of the Journal of Mineral and Coal Technology under the title “Study of Phosphate Rock Bioleaching Using Aspergillus Niger Fungus”, phosphate levels in phosphate rock in this country are generally low and contain relatively high levels of impurities from iron and aluminum (± 10 and 11 percent). With these phosphate levels, Indonesia’s fertilizer phosphate feedstock needs are still met by imports, which are relatively expensive.
The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reports that Indonesia will import 6.39 million tons of fertilizer in 2022. The countries of origin of the largest fertilizer imports are China with 1.654 million tons, Canada with 1.204 million tons, Egypt with 754,000 tons and Russia with 743,000 tons.
In addition, Indonesia also purchased a batch of fertilizers from Belarus 569,000 tons, Australia 188,000 tons, Germany 188,000 tons, Vietnam 116,000 tons, Malaysia 104,000 tons and Norway 51,000 tonnes.
President Jokowi said Indonesia imports a lot of fertilizer because locally produced fertilizers have not been able to meet national needs.
“The need for fertilizer in Indonesia is expected to be 13 million tons. Indonesia can only produce 3.5 million tons,” said President Jokowi, broadcast on the official website of the President of the Republic of Indonesia , Friday (03/10/2023).
