If you join the BRICS, Indonesia could become a balancing force

But so far, the Indonesian government has not made a clear decision on Indonesia’s application for BRICS membership.

According to Professor of International Relations at Defense University (Unhan) Anak Agung Banyu Perwita, Indonesia does not need to apply for membership unless it is asked for direct consideration.

“I don’t think Indonesia needs to join (BRICS membership), but if it’s offered, it’s fine,” said Anak Agung. RMOL Political News Agency Monday (21/8).

Furthermore, he also said that Indonesia’s membership in the BRICS did not show bias towards China as the public feared. Instead, Indonesia’s membership can strengthen its role as a counterweight among world powers.

“We have a principle of non-alignment. The economic and political potential (BRICS) is very great, we will actually become a balancing force between world powers,” he explained.

President Jokowi on Sunday (August 20) began his first trip to Africa in nine years in power. Apart from participating in the BRICS summit to be held from August 22 to 24, Jokowi will also visit other African countries, such as Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique.

The BRICS, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, were created in 2009 at the initiative of Russia. The objective is to develop global cooperation between the countries concerned.

The BRICS are often seen as the “pole of resistance” to the G7 economic group which includes the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Japan.

IMF data for 2022 reveals that the total combined gross domestic product (GDP) of the BRICS reached US$22.5 trillion. This amount exceeds the GDP of the G7 which reached 21.4 trillion US dollars.

BRICS countries are now seen as important and significant players in the fight against economic growth and the global political context.
