A man Canada who crashed his rental van into a crowd of pedestrians downtown Toronto, Canada was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years. A total of 11 people were killed in the action in 2018.
News agency report AFPOn Tuesday (14/6/2022), Alek Minassian, who was 25 at the time of the attack, had already been found guilty by a Canadian judge more than a year ago, in March 2021.
On April 23, 2018, Minassian drove a white rental van at full speed through the streets and sidewalks of the metropolis CanadaToronto, leading to pedestrians for over a mile.
Ten people were killed and 16 injured in the attack. Yet the death toll rose to 11 at the end of October 2021 when an injured woman who had spent more than three years in hospital finally succumbed to her injuries.
It was the worst attack in history Toronto.
The jail sentence was handed down on Monday (6/13) local time, less than three weeks after the Supreme Court of Canada handed down cumulative sentences for the killers. This is a provision of the Penal Code since 2011 which authorizes judges to impose very long prison sentences on murderers who cause several deaths.
The court concluded that a prison sentence which “greatly exceeds anyone’s life expectancy is degrading because of its absurdity and, therefore, contrary to human dignity”.
