A long and difficult path Syasya, Unair student, participates in IISMA at the University of Waterloo, Canada

Jakarta: Syasya Nadia Rahmah, a student at the Faculty of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Technology (FTMM) at Airlangga University (Unair), had to travel a long way to study at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is participating in the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program until December 2023.

Syasya revealed that the trip he took from Indonesia took three days to arrive in Canada. The trip includes Surabaya, Jakarta, Incheon, Narita, Montreal and Toronto.

“When we arrived at Waterloo, the campus was still quiet and it was very cold. I also experienced jet lag, my sleep schedule was flipped 180 degrees. “A few days later, I attended various very exciting activities for four consecutive days,” said Syasya, quoted from the unair.ac.id page, Monday, October 30, 2023.

It took him two weeks to adjust to his arrival in Canada. The learning experience became an independent journey full of challenges for this student from Malang.

Before starting learning, students are given time to study and understand the material first. The University of Waterloo uses two main approaches in its learning system.

Public lectures focus on direct presentation of material and are typically attended by 200 to 300 students. On the other hand, tutorials are small classes designed for in-depth discussion.

“I mainly have classes in the morning, one or two classes per day. There is a class that ends around nine in the evening. LEC classes tend to be more relaxed, but I have to study a lot to avoid falling behind. “Professors who teach often ask questions and invite discussions, with content that is not too contextual,” Syasya explained.

Syasya also participates in various activities at the University of Waterloo. The nanotechnology engineering (RN) student participated in several activities, such as Chinese martial arts, skate club, and several volunteer activities.

“In Waterloo, there are often events or volunteering, such as speakers, rallies and rallies, that do not require a registration fee,” he said.

In addition to participating in campus activities, Syasya often explores the Waterloo region. He uses a Watcard (like a KTM) to travel.

“Transport in Waterloo uses the ION train and the free GRT bus,” he said.

Syasya also likes to explore new things. He makes the most of his time by visiting new places, like parks, areas selling food, and even hidden places that only local residents know about.

“In the meantime, I went to Toronto and Niagara Falls. When I was in Toronto, I felt like I was in a movie, modern skyscrapers and various people gathered in this Canadian metropolis. “I am really happy, the people here are very friendly and very kind and helped me during the trip,” Syasya said.

Syasya advised other students to be courageous while making decisions and facing various obstacles. He said the key was self-confidence, hard work and careful study.

Studying at your favorite campus with a full scholarship is no longer a dream, as there are 426 full scholarships from 21 campuses across different cities in Indonesia. For more information, click osc.medcom.id
