Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo revealed developments in creating regulations on publishers’ rights. According to him, the regulations being developed by the Ministry of Communication and Information will be completed in the near future.
Jokowi expressed this during the official opening of the 25th Congress of the Indonesian Journalists Association in 2024, at the State Palace, Monday (25/9/2023).
The regulations require the government to force internet giants such as Google and Facebook to pay for content on their platforms, including local media companies. This rule was also established in Canada, leading Facebook to block news content from that country.
Jokowi explained that the training process turned out to be quite complicated and even took longer than promised.
“We have been discussing this for a long time with all stakeholders. I used to say it would take at least a month, but in practice it is very complicated,” he said.
“This one doesn’t want it. This one wants it, this one doesn’t want it. It hasn’t been over for a long time,” he added.
However, according to Jokowi, these regulations will be completed in the near future, although it is hoped that there will be no more “tugs and wars” regarding the implementation of these regulations.
“We have been discussing this for a long time and now the process is almost finished. Not finished, almost finished. Hopefully this will no longer be a hindrance,” he said.
According to Jokowi, during discussions on this regulation, it is still necessary to improve the meeting point between stakeholders. Although now it seems that there is already a mutual understanding between them.
On another occasion, when confirmed to the Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie said that the regulation would be finalized in the near future.
“Sooner, according to the president’s instructions, a little more, a little more can be achieved,” said Budi Arie.
Although he still doesn’t know what the problem is. “Yes, there are discussions about the platform, the algorithm, the debate is just here and there,” he said.
Press Council Chairman Ninik Rahayu said the discussions focused on views on the draft submitted to the Cabinet Secretariat. We are therefore currently awaiting a decision from President Jokowi.
In addition, according to him, the government also carried out a harmonization process involving the press council and associated foreign platforms.
