Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Google announced that it would stop blocking information in Canada. They also reportedly agreed to pay publishers in this country.

Google and Alphabet President of Global Affairs Kent Walker said on his official blog that their parties had held a series of meetings regarding the issue of online news law in Canada.

“After extensive discussions, we are pleased that the Government of Canada has committed to addressing our key concerns through Bill C-18, which includes the need for a simplified path to exemptions with thresholds of “clear commitments,” Walker said.

“While we work with the government through the exemption process based on regulations that will be released soon, we will continue to send valuable traffic to Canadian publishers,” they said, quoted on Thursday (11/30/2023) .

This figure is well below the government’s previous estimate, which put Google’s annual payments at around CAD 172 million. This figure, however, is in line with Google’s estimates.

The companies still need to sign agreements with media companies after negotiations. Google has rejected a mandatory negotiation model that would have led it to engage in discussions with media organizations.

On the contrary, Radio-Canada reports that Google only needs to negotiate with representative groups, which it says limits the company’s arbitrage risks.

“After constructive discussions, our government and Google have reached an agreement: they will contribute to the Online News Act. We are working hard to make this happen,” wrote Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage, in X .

“This law is good news for journalism, for online platforms and for Canadians,” he added.
